Freshers advice usually focuses on nights out. But most student safety risks happen in ordinary moments: late libraries, unfamiliar routes, and shared accommodation.

1) Library and Study-Session Safety

  • Share your expected leave time with one trusted contact
  • Avoid isolated exits; choose lit, monitored routes
  • Pre-book transport before your battery drops below 20%
  • Keep emergency contacts pinned on your lock screen

2) Campus Walking Protocol (After Dark)

  1. Pick the route with lighting and foot traffic, not the shortest route.
  2. Keep one ear free if using headphones.
  3. If uncomfortable, enter a staffed building/shop and reset.
  4. Use a scheduled check-in call when walking alone.

Simple rule

Your plan should still work when your friends are busy, your phone is low, and the weather is bad.

3) Accommodation Safety (Halls + Shared Houses)

  • Don’t prop main doors open for convenience
  • Confirm who has spare keys and change routines after disputes
  • Use door viewers/chains where available
  • Agree flat rules for unknown guests at night

4) Society Events and House Parties

  • Use a buddy pair with a defined home-time check
  • Carry independent return options (fare + battery + route)
  • If separated, move to a staffed point and regroup there
  • If drinks are involved, use one designated “clear head” contact

5) International Student Extra Safeguards

If you’re new to Ireland, pre-save local emergency numbers, nearest Garda station, late-night transport options, and trusted campus support contacts in one note on your phone.

Don’t rely on “text me when home.”

Students need systems, not intentions. Set your check-in call before you head out.
